Terminal Server and Citrix Services

However, our experience extends to providing Terminal Server and Citrix solutions for companies using more mainstream products. Working closely with a Citrix Gold Partner we offer a range of consultancy, specification, installation and trouble-shooting services.

Wide area and remote connectivity

Thin client solutions, such as Citrix, provide the answer to organisations looking to share applications and data between sites dispersed over a large geographical area. The easiest way to discuss this is to take an existing customer for whom we installed such as solution.

Bradford Social Services Youth Offending Team [YOT] have a central office and three regional offices spread over the city and surrounding areas. The YOT provides support and advice services to young offenders.

Like many Social Service departments there was a basic wide area network between each office providing email and Internet access. At Bradford it was a very reasonable 1MB leased line link between offices. This is fine for email but the line speeds were not fast enough to share the database information or applications. Therefore, the YOT users had been running four different copies of the core business OpenInsight database called YOIS.

However, as kids moved between areas it was quite possible for records to be out of date or even duplicated on different sites causing a massive headache for the users. What’s more every time the YOIS application needed a program upgrade it had to be done four times. Four nightly backups were required and users had to have multiple passwords to get into each office’s database.

Bradford Social Services turned to Prosolve Software. In December 2000 we installed a Citrix server at the main office. The data from the four sites was merged into one and Citrix client software was installed on the PCs at each of the remote sites. Now all of the users share the same database and performance is as if the application was on each desktop. What’s more using the Citrix Published Application the users simply click on a desktop icon and can’t even tell that they are running a thin client session.
