Microsoft .NET

With the release of .NET, Microsoft has opened a whole new era of software development. A truly safe runtime environment promises users the ability to run and install software without worrying about the impact of versions and incompatibilities that has dogged Windows development from the outset.

At Prosolve Software we took a crucial business decision in the summer of 2001 to begin serious investigation into the .NET framework and the Visual Studio .NET development environment.

Tony Marler of Prosolve commented, “We have previously worked with traditional client server, 3-tier and n-tier development using Visual Basic so progressing to VB.NET may seem as natural evolutionary step. But .NET involves a really seismic shift and the decision to move the majority of our development resource to it was not taken likely.”

Why have we taken the decision to move to .NET?

Apart from the type safe and runtime safe environment the .NET platform provides such a rich environment. Inheritance, method overloading, structured exception handling, and free threading all make Visual Basic .NET a powerful object-oriented programming language – better than anything that has gone before.

We have already been awarded our first two .NET development contracts. The first for Charring Cross Hospital will be using .NET Windows Forms [see more here] and a second is to be developed as a browser solution using Web Services and ASP.NET.

Services

Microsoft officially released the .NET framework on 15th February 2002 but at Prosolve Software we had already been working with the beta versions of the software for many months.

Our initial focus will be to provide bespoke development services and migration strategies to our customers. Our healthcare team will be moving the iNova software to the .NET platform providing both browser and forms client versions.

As the uptake of .NET increases we see the consultancy and training requirements increasing and will move to address this as required.
